WHITING, Ind. (AP) — Energy has been restored to BP’s sprawling oil refinery in northwest Indiana following an outage that prompted the corporate to temporarily shut down the complex and evacuate staff, BP stated final Friday.
BP spokesperson Christina Audisho stated in a press release that energy was again on Friday on the refinery following Thursday’s outage, and the refinery’s workplace buildings and close by roads had reopened.
She stated that “operations have been stabilized on the refinery.” However Audisho didn’t instantly reply to an electronic mail from The Related Press asking for BP to elaborate on the state of affairs on the refinery, together with whether or not refining had resumed and if the outage’s trigger had been decided.
Audisho stated all refinery employees have been accounted for and no accidents have been reported following the outage on the refinery, situated alongside Lake Michigan about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Chicago.
Town of Whiting stated Thursday that the refinery was flaring its stacks in response to the outage “to burn off the additional product” in what was described as a “regular course of” following such an occasion.
Audisho stated in Friday’s assertion that air monitoring continues across the refinery “and no elevated readings have been recorded.”
The city of Whiting said air monitoring performed at a number of location by each BP and Lake County had decided that “there was no hazard to the general public.”
The refinery is the most important within the U.S. Midwest and sixth-largest nationally, processing about 440,000 barrels of crude oil every day, making a wide range of liquid fuels and asphalt.
